Women’s Soccer:
LBCC gets back on track with 6-0 playoff win over Pasadena
The winning streak is now at one game.
After having its 99-game national junior college-record unbeaten streak snapped last Monday, Long Beach City College began a new one, beginning with a 6-0 thrashing over No. 13-seed Pasadena City College Saturday afternoon in an opening-round Southern California regional playoff game at LBCC.
No. 4 Long Beach avenged its 3-1 loss to the Lancers last week by dominating the game from the opening whistle. LBCC’s first objective was to get on the score board early in the game, which they did thanks to a put-back goal by sophomore midfielder Stephanie Leotti (Rowland HS) in the 18th minute.
On the scoring play, freshman forward Shaneka’s Gordon’s (Bronx, NY) shot was deflected by PCC goalie Brittnii Zorrilla. Sophomore forward Mallory Olloque (Millikan HS) took the rebound and set up Leotti’s shot for the 1-0 lead.
Despite constant pressure by the Vikings, the score remained 1-0 until halftime. In the second, the Vikings made good on their scoring opportunities to post five goals.
Sophomore forward Christina Pauley (Santa Ynez valley HS) and freshman forward Christina Graham (Edison HS) both scored two second-half goals each to lead the LBCC charge. Freshman forward Kelly Matosian (Mayfair HS) added a breakaway goal to round out the scoring for the Vikings.
“The team came out with a lot of heart today,” said LBCC co-head coach Alex Camargo. “They turned their intensity levels up to where it had to be and took care of business out on the field.”
Freshman goal keeper Sarah Phillips (Los Alamitos HS) had an easy time in goal as the Vikings outshot the Lancers by a 32-2 margin. Phillips had one save to post her 17th shutout of the season.
For Pasadena (14-7-1), Zorrilla allowed three goals in 64 minutes and posted six saves. Casey Hodge relieved Zorrilla for the final 26 minutes and had two saves while giving up three goals.
Long Beach (22-1-2) returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 22) at 2 p.m. when it hosts either No. 5 Cuesta College or No. 12 San Diego Mesa College in a second-round playoff game.
