Freshman Malia Palacios led LBCC with her third place finish in the 800 and qualfied for two events SoCals.

Sophomore Alexandria Zamora was ninth in the 400 and also qualifies in two events for SoCals.

Freshman Amanda Hernandez was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles.

Women’s Track and Field:

Long Beach finishes sixth at SCC Finals, advance five to SoCal Regionals

The Long Beach City College women’s track and field team totaled 18 points to finish in sixth place out of 10 teams at the 2009 South Coast Conference Championships on Saturday at Compton College.

The Vikings compiled three top-five finishes at the SCC Finals and qualified three individuals and both relay teams for this weekend’s Southern California prelims.

Earning the Vikings’ top finish was freshman Malia Palacios in the 800 meters. Palacios finished in third place with a time of 2:22.21. She also teamed with sophomore Alexandria Zamora, and freshmen Margaret Mitchell and Laniece Jackson in the 4x400 meter relay to finish in fourth place (4:13.09) and also qualify for SoCals.

Freshman Amanda Hernandez was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.00 to earn a spot in the SoCal prelims.

Zamora is also an individual qualifier in the 400 meters after finishing ninth (1:02.38) at the SCC meet.

Also moving on is the 4x100 meter relay team. Although they failed to finish at the SCC finals, the squad’s time of 51.16 earlier this season earned them a spot at the SoCal prelims.
