Women’s Water Polo:
Manderino's 11 goals powers LBCC to two tournament wins
Sophomore center Calli Maderino totaled 11 goals in two games to lead the No. 3 state-ranked Long Beach City College women’s water polo team to a pair of wins at Day 1 of the 10th annual truWest Battle at the Beach tournament.
The two-day, 18-team event is being hosted by LBCC and Cypress College.
The Vikings began the morning with a 12-5 win over Ventura and then cruised to a 12-3 victory against Golden West later that afternoon.
In the early win, LBCC surged out to a 7-0 lead against Ventura and never looked back. Maderino poured in six goals in that game while freshman Mieke Howell chipped in with two goals.
Against Golden West, once again the Vikings build up a big lead, jumping out to an 8-0 advantage before allowing a Rustlers goal.
Three of Maderino’s five goals came in the second quarter. Freshmen Dianna Melancon and Ashley Cordobes added two goals each against Golden West.
The wins improved Long Beach to 21-3 overall. LBCC returns to action on Saturday with two games to be played at Cypress College. At 12:20 pm, the Vikings face Santa Ana and at 3:35 pm, LBCC will take on rival Riverside. |
