Women’s
Water Polo:
Vikings
win SoCal championship after 10-8 win over Golden
West
The
Long Beach City College women’s water polo team
beat Golden West College 10-8 in the championship
game of the Southern California Regionals on Saturday
at Cypress College.
LBCC
also defeated Chaffey College 13-2 earlier in
the day in the semifinals. That win automatically
qualified the Vikings for the 2003 State Championship
tournament, which takes place next weekend (Nov.
22-23) at Solano College.
Long
Beach ’s 10-8 win over Golden West was its fourth
win in five games against the Rustlers this season,
and most likely, the teams will face each other
one more time in the state tournament championship
game.
Freshman
Melissa Soria (left) scored a game-high four goals
and sophomore Jenny Rueda added two goals for
the Vikings. LBCC also got single goals from sophomores
Jackie Prine, Cia Cobb, Viviana Morales, and freshman
Jessie Oshann.
Jamie
Wendell and Kim Hayes both had five saves in goal
for the Vikings.
Long
Beach is 28-1 as it heads into the state tournament.
The Vikings play their first game on Saturday
against an opponent to be determined. LBCC is
making its second straight state tournament appearance
under head coach Chris Oeding.
Last
season, the Vikings finished runner-up to Golden
West at the state championships.
